Vaccination & Health Checklist Before Your Dog's First Playdate
A quick checklist to run through before any new dog-to-dog meetup, whether it's your dog's first playdate ever or just the first with a new friend.
A little health prep before a playdate protects both dogs and makes the meetup itself much less stressful for everyone involved.
Core vaccinations, up to date: rabies, distemper, and parvovirus are the standard baseline most vets recommend before any dog socializes with others. If you're not sure your dog's records are current, it's worth a quick check with your vet before scheduling a meetup rather than after.
Bordetella (kennel cough) matters for group settings especially: it spreads easily between dogs in close contact, and while it's rarely serious on its own, it's an easy thing to prevent with a vaccine most vets can administer quickly.
Flea and tick prevention, current: obvious in warmer months, easy to forget the rest of the year, but a playdate is exactly the kind of close-contact situation where this matters most.
A quick self-check the day of: no signs of illness (coughing, vomiting, lethargy, discharge from eyes or nose), no open wounds, and if your dog is a female, not currently in heat. All of it's worth a quick check before heading out, even for dogs you've met before.
When in doubt, ask: it's completely normal, and appreciated by most owners, to ask about vaccination status before a first meetup. Most experienced dog owners will offer this information upfront; if a fellow owner is hesitant to answer, that's useful information too.
